Born on 10 February 1800 at Middleton Cheney, Northamptonshire, the second son of Ralph Churton (1754–1831), archdeacon of St David's, and his wife, Mary (1770–1829), the daughter of Richard Calcot, of Steane, Northamptonshire.

Educated at Charterhouse (1810–18) and Christ Church, Oxford he proceeded BA in 1821 (MA, 1824).
1821-1829 he was an assistant master at Charterhouse, where his pupils included Thackeray and Thomas Mozley.
        1827 he was ordained priest.
1830 he became curate to the rector of Hackney.

He married Caroline Watson in July 1832 and they had four sons and one daughter.

In 1834 he accepted the living of Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, but the following year he was appointed rector of Crayke in the North Riding of Yorkshire, where he remained until his death. He was a prebendary of York Cathedral from 1841, and archdeacon of Cleveland from 1846 to 1873.

He died at Crayke on 4 July 1874 and was buried there. He was survived by his wife.

His daughter Susanna published anonymously a Short Memoir of her father (1874) and edited a volume of his Poetical Remains (1876) which included some of his own verse as well as translations from Spanish, Catalan, and Anglo-Saxon.

She married her father's curate, William Inge, later provost of Worcester College, Oxford. Their son was W.R. Inge, Dean of St Paul's.
