Note
Queen Elizabeth II’s 1979 Gulf tour was a historic three-week state visit to Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Oman, marking the first time a British sovereign and female head of state toured the region.
British Ambassador to the Netherlands Sir Richard Sykes and his 19-year-old Dutch footman, Karel Straub, were assassinated by IRA on 22 March 1979.
