      Note

The Moluccan community in the Netherlands numbers around 70,000. Arriving in 1951, they were predominantly former soldiers of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army. They were promised assistance in establishing an independent South Moluccan state. When the independent state wasn’t established the Dutch government did not facilitate their return and this community faced decades of isolation, often housed in repurposed WWII concentration camps. Frustration led to radicalisation in the 1970s, resulting in heavily publicised train hijackings and hostage crises by younger generations.
