Educated at Southwell School, Nottinghamshire, Trinity College, Cambridge, and Magdalene College, Cambridge. He was a Fellow of Magdalene College from 1802-1814, and President from 1805-1810. He referred to himself as the 'Pepys Librarian' but there is currently no further evidence to support that he was appointed to this post. After leaving Magdalene College he became the Rector of Darlaston, Staffordshire, until his death.
