In 1970 John Simpson became a radio reporter, travelling frequently to Northern Ireland, and two years later, in the wake of Bloody Sunday and the burning of the British Embassy in Dublin, he was appointed the BBC’s first correspondent in Dublin. He stayed in this job until 1975.
