Scope and content
The real core of the diary runs from 10 October 1907 [marked 'Vol I' by Inge] until about 1941, with a gap between 18 May 1915 and 1 January 1917.
The earlier diaries are scanty and restricted by the stationer's page format. From 1907, at the end of each year, he usually wrote his reflections upon it. He wrote concisely, and mostly factually, about his family, his lecturing and
preaching, dining and travelling, and about the institutions he knew well. These included, St Paul's, several Oxford and Cambridge Colleges, the Modern Churchman's Union, the British Academy, the Eugenics Society, and the National Portrait Gallery).
He was friends with three successive Masters of Magdalene - S.A. Donaldson, A.C. Benson and A.B. Ramsay and he knew some politicians quite well (e.g. Haldane, Beaverbrook).
Some of his opinions come through strongly: such as his dislike of Roman Catholicism, the Anglican cathedral choral tradition, High Church ritualism, Socialism, and his support for 'appeasement'.
