History
Born in Felindre, near Llandovery, he was the son of Captain Francis Miller and his second wife, Ann, née Davies.
Miller was educated at private schools, then proceeded to St John's College, Cambridge, where he graduated as fifth wrangler in 1826. He was elected to a College Fellowship in 1829, and to the professorship of mineralogy in 1832. He proceeded in 1841 to the degree of MD in order to retain his Fellowship, which, however, he vacated by marriage with Harriet Susan Minty in 1844. They had two sons and four daughters; one son and two daughters died before their father.
