Two letters from Penrose and 11 plans for a proposed new building linking First Court with the Pepys Building (roughly where the Bright's building is now). The plans were never realised.

Penrose removed the stucco (1750) and battlements on these exterior elevations.

The joints in his brickwork on the street front were re-cut and re-pointed by S.E. Dykes Bower in 1963-65, but the brickwork in the north gable end remained much as Penrose had left it.

Penrose also laid out River Court garden after the demolition of three rows of cottages.

River Court is the area between the southern elevation of First Court facing the river and the river. This area of land was bought by Dr Peter Peckard (Master 1781-97) for the College from the City and from Jesus College in 1790-91. The cottages on the site were not cleared until 1873 when Penrose laid out a garden and designed the ornamental gates.

The gates and piers were re-erected in 1983.

The watergate was demolished in c.1953 and the plinth and steps down to the river were replaced by the present continuous dwarf wall in c.1983.

The canopied pinnacle was situated at the junction between the Chapel and the rest of the range to house the statue of Mary Magdalene. It was built in 1876 but was later removed as it had become unsafe. The statue is currently outside the student library.
