Notice issued by Francis McDonald Turner about the Loving Cup which reads as follows:

"As the custom of passing round a Loving Cup is very ancient, many differences of procedure have grown up. At Magdalene the practice is to pass the cup round, but not across, the table in a clockwise direction, as with port. As each member of the College drinks from the cup, he should be supported by his neighbours on both sdes, who stand with him while he drinks. If he is at the end of the table, the person opposite him should stand as well as his neighbour on his own side. He receives the cup from his righthand neighbour, bows to him, and before drinking bows also to his lefthand neighbour, now standing.

In drinking a Loving Cup members of a Society pledge themselves to each other and to the Society in which they are united. When, as tonight or on Whitsunday, the occasion is associated with a past member (or members) of the Society, the words 'In piam memoriam' should be said by each member before drinking".
