Scope and content

Mid to late 19th century catalogue of the Pepys Library bound by Macmillan & Co.

The catalogue is an augmented transcription of the 'Alphabet' section of the 'Supellex Liberaria', the catalogue of the Pepys Library dating from 1700 which is part of the Pepys Library. The catalogue was evidently for practical use in the Pepys Library due to the inclusion of the location of each book in the book presses, which is not given in Pepys's version of 1700.

Pasted into the back of the volume is a letter from Alexander Macmillan to Mrs Neville [Lucy Frances Greville, wife of the Master] dated 21 November 1887:

'Dear Mrs Neville,
Thanks very much for informing me of the Dickinson etching. I am ordering copies for here & for Cambridge. The original drawing is & has been in my room here & I greatly value it. I have at my private house at Tooting an early oil painting of Mr Lowes Dickinson of Kingsley in his study at Eversley. The study there is I here terribly defaced. This picture has therefore considerable historical value & to me much delightful memory.
Some day the Master & you might manage to see it,
Very sincerely yours
Alex Macmillan
