At the first Pepys dinner in 1905 there was a party of 'very distinguished guests and a great many speeches'.
'Dr Butler, Master of Trinity, proposed the toast of the College and described a town and gown row in which Charles Kingsley had saved the life of the Master of Trinity by deflecting from his head a blow aimed at him with a butcher's chopper.
