Part of College Archives

The College's Foundation Charter of 1542 laid down that Lord Audley and his heirs should write the statutes to cover the governance of the College. Lord Audley died in 1544 and as nothing had been achieved he wrote in his will that his executors should draw up the statutes. His executors were Lady Elizabeth Audley, Edward Lord North, Sir Thomas Pope, Thomas Barber, and Edmund Martyn and they delivered the statutes on 10 February 1555.

In 1565 the foundation statutes were corrected and additions made. This was done on the original statutes rather than on a separate clean document. They were sent to the Master and Fellows by the then Visitor, Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk on 24 January 1565.

The 1565 Latin statutes were not superseded until a new set was written in 1860. Since then there have been revisions in 1882, 1926, 1957 and 1997.

The Master usually serves until reaching the statutory fellowship retirement age of 67. Exceptionally this period may be extended until the Master in question reaches 70 as occurred in the case of Duncan Robinson.

College Magazine
MCCA/MCHR/3/1 · Series · 1909 - 2025
Part of College Archives

Original series ran from 1909 to 1956 and then a new numbering series started with No. 1 being 1956-1957.

The original series contained mainly articles, poems, and stories from undergraduates. It was printed at the expense of the Amalgamation Club and was circulated only to residents members and a few subscribers.
From 1952-1956 the Magdalene College Record was printed from the Magazine and sent to all members of the College Association.
In 1956 in view of the Appeal for Endowment the Record was sent to every old member.
Future issues would only be sent to members of the College Association and to those who had subscribed to the Appeal.

The old Magazine was discontinued mainly on the grounds of expense. It was hoped that in its new and reduced form it would still contain articles, serious and light, on things which interested Magdalene men. The Editor invited contributions and news from all members of the College. The Period covered by the Record was from 1 September to 31 August.

Trinity Foot Beagles
MCCA/MCCS/12 · Series
Part of College Archives

This club was founded in 1862 although there were packs kept in Cambridge before this date which were the fore runners of the club.

In 1862 R. G. Hoare (Trinity College) brought his private pack of beagles to Cambridge and in 1867 W. E. Currey (Trinity College, Tutor) brought his beagles over from his home in Ireland. These two packs established beagling firmly in Cambridge.

According to The Trinity Foot Beagles 1862 – 1912 by F. Claude Kempson published in 1912 the Trinity Foot Beagles were a subscription pack managed by undergraduates and hunted in the countryside around Cambridge. There was no formal constitution, no committee, nor any meeting of the subscribers, nor a balance-sheet, nor any positive connection with Trinity College, although traditionally there are strong links with both Trinity and Magdalene Colleges. Any member of the University was welcome to join in as long as he paid a subscription.

Kempson credits William Edward Currey (Trinity College) as being the founder and Rowland Hunt (Magdalene College) as being co-founder.

May Ball
MCCA/MCCS/18 · Series
Part of College Archives

The first May Ball was planned for 1910 but was cancelled following the death of King Edward VII who died on 6 May 1910. The first ball went ahead the following year and was held on 12 June 1911. An account of the ball which appeared in the College Magazine, vol. II, No. 1, December 1911 reads as follows:

"A ball was held in the College on Monday, June 12th. This was the first time such an experiment had been tried, and it proved a great success. A marquee, gaily bedecked with streamers of green and white, was erected for the purpose in the second court. We must congratulate everyone connected with the organisation on the excellence of their work; and the stewards deserve much praise for the way in which they fulfilled their arduous task of being interpreters of abstruse hieroglyphics, walking Who's Who's, and yet maintaining an ornamental appearance. Herr Moritz Wur's band supplied the music, to the complete satisfaction of the company, some of whom were inspired to demonstrate certain of the items, including the 'Burglar's Prowl,' and the 'Bogie Walk'. We must compliment the secretary on his excellent idea of providing shawls for protection against the dewy morn, and we have also to thank the Master and Fellows for their kindness in allowing us to roam in the garden - a privilege that was much enjoyed'.
