Most records relating to admissions were destroyed by secretarial action in about 1997. Fortunately the Admissions Tutor for 1980 - 1982 kept duplicates of some of the more important files.

Information on the admission of students prior to this series was recorded in Registers I, II and III [see MCGB/4/1/2-4].

There is an index covering the Registers from 1644-1980 available in the search room.

Matriculation Photographs

The series is interrupted from 1967 to 1974 inclusive owing to the unwillingness of the then undergraduates to submit to this exercise [source: Dr R. Hyam].

No matriculation photo was taken in 2020 due to Covid but there was one taken for the 2020 year group in Oct 2021 for those who were available and many travelled. The 2021 photograph was taken at the start of this year, as usual [source: Angie Jewell, Tutorial Administrator].

The photographs include both undergraduates and postgraduates. From the back postgraduates are arranged A-Z by surname followed by undergraduates A-Z by surname.

Student Tutorial Files
MCCA/MCAC/2/1 · Subserie · 1912 - present
Parte de College Archives

Before 1987 files were arranged by Tutor. These are divided into two groups:

(1) The integrated files of Ramsey, Vernon-Jones, Salter, Scott and Turner, 1912 - c.1961 (arranged by P. Fitzsimons in 1980).

(2) Then separate runs of files for Babbage, Bennett, Stevens, Grubb, Kolbert, Howarth, Reynolds, Deakin, Turner, Duffy, Field.

Searches before 1987 therefore need to be conducted via the name of Tutor (obtainable for each student from the Admissions Register), or last tutor in the cases of a transfer:

A.S. Ramsey, 1912-1927
V.J. Vernon-Jones, 1927-1945
F.R. Salter, 1927-1945
F.R.F. Scott, 1927-1968
F. McD, C. Turner, 1945-1961

D.W. Babbage, 1946-1974
R.F. Bennett, 1952-1979
J.E. Stevens, 1958-1974
P.J. Grubb, 1963-1974
C.F. Kolbert, 1969-1987
T.E.B. Howarth, 1973-1979
P.E. Reynolds, 1974-2001
B.M. Deakin, 1974-1988
D.M. Turner, 1979-1983
J.E. Field, 1974-1985
E. Duffy, 1980-1993

After 1987 the files were arranged by Matriculation date.

Masters' Private Books
MCCA/MCAD/1/2 · Subserie
Parte de College Archives

There are three volumes of Master's Books. The first was started by Daniel Waterland (Master, 1713-1740) and the second ends at the death of A. C. Benson in 1925 (Master, 1915-1925). There is then a gap until Henry Willink (Master, 1948–1966) decided to renew the practice and started a third volume. All Masters then contributed to it down to Duncan Robinson (Master, 2002-2012). This third volume is closed and is only available for the Master.

Old Library

Historically known as the Foundation or Fellows' Library, it was housed in the Chapel roof until 1733 (gathering mould).
It was then moved to A2 First Court.

After the completion of the Master's Lodge in 1835, the Library was rehoused (1847-50) in what had been the Master's dining and drawing rooms, with access from the Chapel Staircase.

In 1927 an annexe was added to form a reading room.

In 1964 part of the ceiling collapsed and it was rebuilt in 1966. The Parlour was formed out of the inner room.

Pepys Dinner
MCCA/MCAD/11/2/6 · Subserie · 1905-2024
Parte de College Archives

The first Pepys Dinner was held on 23 February 1905. It was part of the Articles of Agreement (1724) for the Pepys Library that there should be an annual celebration in gratitude for Samuel Pepys' benefaction.

According to A.S. Ramsey in Bygone Days at Magdalene it was the idea of Stuart Donaldson (Master, 1904-1915) who said 'IF we are going to make a splash we may as well make a big one'.

The Pepys Dinner is held annually on 23 February as this was Pepys' birthday.

It was not held between 1995 and 2005 and it was not held in 2021 due to Covid.
