The power to appoint the Master was invested in the Visitor of the College until 2012. Following an amendment to the College statutes, which was approved by the Queen in Council in February 2012, the Master is now appointed by the Governing Body of the College.

The Master usually serves until reaching the statutory fellowship retirement age of 67. Exceptionally this period may be extended until the Master in question reaches 70 as occurred in the case of Duncan Robinson.

Steward

c.1718 Theodore Waterland was appointed Steward and Bursar

1786 William Bywater was serving as Steward (appointment dates unknown)

? - 1802 Rev Richard Buck was Steward and Bursar.

1802 - Rev Samuel Lowe was appointed Steward, Librarian, and Registrar (he took on the duties of Bursar when Rev Thomas Paley was ill in 1805). Lowe possibly died in 1834.

In MACD/14/3/3/3 the accounts are signed and sometimes 'Steward is written after the signature as follows - John Fortescue 1818-1820 (name appears earlier but without 'Steward'). John Lodge 1821-1828 (after 1829 he is listed as President but he could still have been Steward); G. Urquart 1834-1837 (possibly from 1834 and possibly later)

1870-1896 Francis Pattrick. When he died he bequeathed £1,000 to the College.

1896-1897 Mr Gill (former Assistant Steward)

Nov 1897 - Easter Term 1899 the Master acted as Steward in the absence of Gill (ill health). Gill died in Dec 1899 or Jan 1900.

1900 - A.S. Ramsey was appointed Steward.

In 1901 when the cook William Swannell retired Ramsey resumed control of the Kitchens - the last Cambridge College to do so. Previously the Kitchen and Buttery were in effect 'privatised' being managed by a Cook (also referred to as the caterer) and Butler who owned much of the equipment and were entitled to take all the profits. This was an immediate success and in the first year the Kitchen Account shows a £200 profit. By 1912 the profit was £1200.

In 1948 Dr Ladborough resigned as Steward due to ill health

Assistant Steward
27 February 1890 - It was agreed that there should be an assistant steward, whose duties would begin in Michaelmas Term 1890. He would receive one half of the Steward’s stipend [MCBG/4/2/1]. On 11 June 1890 Mr Gill was appointed Assistant Steward [MCGB/4/2/1].

The Stewards' books contain weekly accounts for members of College. Each volume contains a list of members of the College in order of seniority - Master and Fellows, Fellow Commoners, scholars, and sizars. Next to each name is the amount owed.

At various dates different payments are included. In the College Order Book [MCGB/4/2/1] it states that the items of catechist, utensils, cook, candles and lamps, and scavenger which had been omitted since 1783 should again be included in the Steward's Book.

Butler

The Butler's name has been written in the front of some of the Buttery Books. This gives us a partial list of the names of the Butlers although we don't have exact dates. The College Order Book (MCGB4/2/1) also provides more information.

[1] At a meeting of the Master and Fellows on 7 March 1799 [MCGB/4/2/1] it was reported that the College had been defrauded to a very considerable amount by the late Butler, Edward Mills. They resolved to use all legal means to recover the amount of that fraud.

[2] In 1901 the cook William Swannell died and the College resumed control of the kitchen and Buttery. A.S. Ramsey was appointed Steward and Jack French was Butler and Kitchen Manager.

Buttery Books were kept by the Butler and recorded the weekly totals spent by each member of College on sizings (food bought from the buttery in addition to their commons). The volumes list the members of College in order of seniority followed by a total amount spent. This amount was then entered into the Steward's Books [see MCAD/14/1/1/1-122] under the heading 'But'.

At the bottom of each page are totals for:
pane, potu, incre, poore and prom and a separate entry for gate fines.

From the volume which starts in 1730 [MCAD/14/2/1/17 1730-1736] there is a separate entry for Gate Fines at the bottom of each page.

From the volume which starts in 1798 [MCAD/14/2/1/30 1798-1803] additional entries are made at the bottom of the pages for items including gardeners, poundage on beer, rats, carpenters, workmen, glaziers, whitesmith, laundress, bread and beer on Christmas Day and Whit Sunday, bricklayers, and painters.

Butler’s Accounts, Lent term 1913 – Long Vacation 1920
List of Fellows and students in the first column; then amounts entered under the following headings: Port, Sherries, Burgundies, Clarets, Champagnes, Hocks, Moselles, Spirits, Beer, Minerals [ginger beer, soda, lemons, ginger ale], Cigars, Cigarettes, Sundries. Less detail is given from Michaelmas 1915.

From Easter 1916 – Long Vacation 1920 as well as the Butler’s accounts there are also Steward’s Accounts. These give a list of Fellows and students, then amounts entered under the following headings:
Bread, Butter, Cheese, Gate fines, Bicycles, Baths, University Bills, College Dues.

At the back of the volume are Accounts for Lectures for Michaelmas Term 1927-Long Vacation 1929 listing subjects in the first column with amounts entered under names which are listed in the top row.

These volumes are a daily record of what alcohol and tobacco were bought in the Buttery. Volumes 1-4 look the same and are arranged in the same way with the names and amount owed being listed under the type of drink. Volumes 5-11 look different and are set out inside in a different way (in a table) although they contain the same information.

Fellows were forbidden to marry. When the ban was lifted in 1882 Arthur Peskett was the first to get married.

From 1781 to 1971 there was a series of Order Books which contained a record of the 'Order' of the Governing Body. They were written during the Governing Body Meetings and signed by the Fellows at the end of the meeting.
From 1911 onwards a separate series of Minute Books was kept to record discussions and decisions of the Governing Body.

At a meeting on 18 February 1971 the Governing Body agreed that extracts from the Minutes would no longer be pasted into the Order Books. They were then used to record the appointment of Fellows, Honorary Fellows, Masters, and Scholars.

By c.1718 the Master Daniel Waterland had reviewed the College's finances and written it all in his Master's Book. He then appointed his brother Theodore as Bursar and Steward [College History].

These are the individual bills submitted to the College for payment and detail work done. They run from Michaelmas to Michaelmas and are arranged in 4 separate quarterly bundles and then in one wrapper. The quarters are:
